SECURE ACCURATE ELECTIONS GOALS FOR 2009-2010 What would SAE like to see accomplished by the elections of 2010? 1. Federal laws requiring all votes to be cast on voter verifiable paper ballots which are deposited into a secure ballot box. Machine marked paper ballots, such as those for the handicapped, would also be verified by the voter and then placed in the same secured ballot box. 2. Federal laws requiring that all elections be audited with a statistically significant hand count of paper ballots. A minimum requirement should be no less than 5 percent. 3. Federal laws demanding stiff penalties for those trying to prevent voters from exercising their right to vote through intimidation or suppressing votes through such means as purging or caging votes. 4. Open source software that is not privately owned and therefore open to public inspection. 5. Publicly funded elections that will allow our elected officials more time to concentrate on doing their jobs and less time on fund raising. Issues That Should Be Studied For Consideration: 1. The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and the District of Columbia). http://www.nationalpopularvote.com/pages/explanation.php 2. Universal Voter Registration has been proposed by such respected organizations as the Brennan Center. This system would automatically register every citizen in the United States when they turned 18 without having to officially register. At the very least, we should simplify our registration process. A Dangerous Idea That Must Be Stopped INTERNET VOTING for overseas voters is a dangerous idea that is currently being promoted by Senator Bill Nelson. This has too many flaws to be permitted. http://www.nwfdailynews.com/news/voting_12646___article.html/nelson_hollarn.html Here are some websites that detail the dangers of internet voting: From Popular Mechanics Technology, Internet Voting in Florida Raises Security Concerns: http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/industry/4288327.html Computer Technologists' statement on internet voting http://www.verifiedvoting.org/article.php?id=5867 Computer Technologists Statement on Internet Voting
